The Soul of Tango
October 11, 2014 @ 7:30 pm - 9:30 pm
$40 – $50Highlighting the grand master of nuevo tango, Astor Piazzolla, and three of his contemporaries, PASO expertly conveys the authentic swing and musicality of Argentine tango like no other ensemble in the Washington, DC area. This show will move audiences with its soulful tango melodies balanced by Argentine pianist, Emilio Teubal’s joyful improvisations.
Piazzolla was responsible for the renaissance of Argentine tango over the past few decades. When he returned to Argentina after long stays in New York City and Paris, he transformed the tango into a modern form that was noticeably influenced by classical composers such as Stravinsky and Hindemith, and also by American jazz. At first scorned and rejected in Argentina for what was believed to be a corruption of the nation’s most loved music, Piazzolla was eventually recognized and widely embraced. By the time he died in 1992, he had written over 300 tango compositions and performed across the globe to standing-room-only crowds.
The concert also features a tango by Raul Garello, a bandoneón player and one of the most significant post-Piazzolla composers, and a tango by the young Argentine Grammy-winning pianist, Octavio Brunetti, that echoes the music of Piazzolla. Joining the orchestra for this special performance is Carolina Zokalsky and Diego di Falco, from Broadway’s Forever Tango, and the area’s newest bandoneon sensations, Rodolfo Zanetti and Emmanuel Trifilio.
